East Village Braces for Smurf Attack

E.V. Grieve alerts us to this one: Signs are now posted on 7th Street and Avenue A warning residents that their cars will be towed if they're not moved by 10 p.m. Wednesday evening, because come Thursday morning, a Smurfy good time will ensue!

Yes. That Smurf movie was not a weird dream/hallucinogenic nightmare we had when we ate "too much Indian food." There really is an upcoming live-action/CGI mess of a thing with a release date of August 3, 2011, and the requisite voiceover talent from George Lopez, Alan Cumming, and Fred Armisen. (Is this why Cumming really dropped out of the Spider-Man musical? For the Smurfs?) Hank Azaria plays Gargamel, and Katy Perry, of course, is Smurfette.

According to the movie's press release:

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park.

Which, intriguingly, is nowhere near the East Village. But closer than Canada.

Consider this is your official alert. If you see tiny blue people/things running around on Thursday, it's not the LSD... but we might prefer that it was.

In memoriam:
