Drink Everclear for Strong Bones, No Teeth

Today's bad-ass booze study:

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute and the USDA's ARS Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center wanted to find out if "low to moderate" drinking compromises the bone health of postmenopausal women.

So they conducted a study that involved giving the test subjects 15 or 30 grams of Everclear (the equivalent of 1 or 2 glasses of wine) with O.J. for eight weeks. And what, do you imagine, happened?

The scientists did not find any negative effects of either dose of alcohol on circulating levels of vitamin D. These results suggest that the relationship previously documented between alcohol consumption and bone disease in alcoholics may only be seen in very heavy drinkers, or may be due to something other than the alcohol itself.

Dr. Somdat Mahabir of the National Cancer Institute concluded, "Collectively, when all the available published epidemiologic data are considered, it looks like low to moderate alcohol may actually have a beneficial effect."

Unless you fall out of the top bunk in your dorm room after a night of low to moderate body shots.
