My Favorite Things

Hollywood's voyage to the Third Dimension is continuing apace with announced plans to re-release newly 3-D-ized versions of 2001, Star Wars, and The Passion of the Christ, but the first 3-D musical -- an all-star remake of The Sound of Music -- is proving to be more difficult than anticipated.

Hugh Jackman (the Captain), Beyonce (Maria) and Liza Minelli (the Baroness) remain attached to the project but over at Indiewire, Anne Thompson is reporting that Steven Spielberg is out, citing political differences with producer Scott Rudin over Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposed Malibu wind farm, with Penny Marshall or Jonathan Demme waiting in the wings to direct.

The Voice has further learned that while the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization has signed on to the basic premise of Diablo Cody's script, which transposes The Sound of Music to mid '70s Soweto and includes a hard PG scene set in a Bangkok drag karaoke joint, the Organization is balking at Rudin's plan to replace the show's original finale, "Climb Every Mountain," with Bob Dylan's specially revised "I Shall Be Released." Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, how do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?
