Remy Ma's Victim Presses On With Suit Against Label

Rapper Remy Ma's shooting victim is borrowing legal strategies from suits against pedophile priests to press her multimillion-dollar claim against the femcee's label, Universal Music Group.

It's the label's fault, so the argument goes. Remy Ma is currently serving an eight-year jail sentence at Rikers for the 2007 shooting of Makeda Barnes-Joseph in the Meatpacking District.

There's a parallel to the pedophile scandal — at least that's what Lauren Raysor, attorney for Makeda Barnes-Joseph, hopes to prove to the appellate court after the $10 million suit was dismissed last year. Raysor stated her case earlier this week.

"Failure to supervise, negligent hiring, and negligent retention," Raysor tells the Voice. "[Universal] continued to feature her on their site right after the shooting, and linked their website to Remy Ma's website."

Barnes-Joseph, formerly a friend of the rapper before the two fought over money, initially filed suit in Bronx Supreme Court.

Raysor previously told reporters: "Universal hires and encourages rap artists to act violently and engage in anti-social behavior in order to sell CDs. Thus, part of the performer's persona promoted by the company is to 'keep it real' and remain 'gangsta.' "

Remy Ma's husband, Brooklyn rapper Papoose — they got married after she was locked up — said earlier this month that he's optimistic that she won't serve near her full term and insists that the appeal of her conviction is going well.
