Report: The Bronx Is America's Fastest Growing "City"

Bronx.jpg
The Bronx contains the country's poorest congressional district, has the greatest share of families receiving food stamps of any county its size in the nation, and has both the city's highest share of low-wage workers and an unemployment rate well above the national average.

According to U-Haul's annual National Migration Trend Report, it's also the fastest-growing "city" in America.

The 25 top growth cities were calculated by measuring inbound moves against outbound moves in communities with more than 5,000 annual moves (at least those moves using U-Haul trucks). The Bronx showed 17.22 percent growth rate last year, far ahead of second-place Houston with 10.8 percent. The only other borough to make the list was Queens, ranked at 24 with 0.93 percent.

Unfortunately for Bronx residents, growing population may not translate into sorely-needed growing political influence and federal spending. Despite last-minute efforts by Governor Paterson and Bronx politicians, only 43 percent of Bronx County households have returned their census forms, significantly below the 50 percent New York State return rate and the 56 percent national rate (in fairness to Bronx residents, they did do significantly better than Brooklyn's 36 percent).

If you haven't returned your census form yet because you never received it, you can call 1-866-872-6868 (or 1-866-928-2010 if you prefer a Spanish-speaking operator) between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., seven days a week, through July 30, 2010. For the hearing-impaired, TDD 1-866-783-2010 (during the times noted above).

All data extracted, painfully, from the excruciatingly slow Take10 participation map at Census.gov
