British Labour Leader Gordon Brown Resigns; David Cameron Becomes New British PM
That was fast. British prime minister Gordon Brown has announced his resignation after stating yesterday that he would be stepping down. Thus ends 13 years of Labour Party rule. 
"I have always strived to serve, to do my best in the in the interest of Britain, its values and its people," Mr. Brown said outside the prime minister's office at 10 Downing Street. "Thank you, and goodbye."
And then he was off to Buckingham Palace to notify Queen Elizabeth II. Yesterday Brown had agreed to stay on as prime minister until September if Labour could agree to a deal with the Lib Dems, but when that possibility ended, he decided to resign.
Deputy Labour leader Harriet Harman will step in as Labour leader until a replacement is elected.
Conservative leader David Cameron, 43, is now the youngest prime minister in nearly two centuries. In an address in front of 10 Downing Street, he said that "he aims to form a proper and full coalition with the Lib Dems," and that "the UK's best days lie ahead."
