Green Cards to Be Green Again, Among Other Things

Green + card. This marriage will totally last.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services have announced today that the Permanent Resident Card -- aka, the "Green Card" -- will be redesigned to incorporate several major new security features (and -- hey, hey! -- deter immigration fraud).

Starting today, all of the new cards will have enhanced super high-tech features, including the following:

--Secure optical media to store biometrics for rapid and reliable identification of the card holder.

--Holographic images, laser engraved fingerprints, and high resolution micro-images to make the card nearly impossible to reproduce.

--Tighter integration of the card design with personalized elements to make it harder to alter the card if stolen.

--Radio Frequency Identification capability so scary Customs and Border Protection officers can read the card from a distance and compare it immediately to file data.

And...drum roll please...

--A preprinted return address to enable the easy return of a lost card.

Also: The card will be green! (It's been pink, white, beige, and other colors unequal to the cinéma vérité of one very special Gérard Depardieu movie for years.)

Small pleasures here, really. We take them when we can.
