Graham Rayman's "The NYPD Tapes: Inside Bed-Stuy's 81st Precinct," chronicles hundreds of recorded hours of cops talking about their jobs between June 1, 2008, and Oct. 31, 2009.

Here's today's outtake:

From a sergeant on October 30, 2008:

"All right, flavor of the month. Make sure you shave, uniform looks squared away, put some polish on your boots, and conform to the guidelines of the patrol guide. Takes five minutes. It keep the hounds off. You look squared away and act like you're squared away, they don't bother you. Look like a slob and you don't know what's going on, they start digging.

That includes smirks, that kind of nonsense. One smirk cost the whole borough 13 CDs last week. It all started when a captain was saying something, and somebody did some stupid remark, didn't say anything, just the concept that he gave pissed him off, that set the whole tone for inspections in the 73, in the 81, and guys getting hammered on midnight and tour changes."
