Trend Watch: Terrorist Facial Hair

Alleged bomb-plotter Faisal Shahzad's post-arrest mug shot has been revealed, and the New York Post calls him "sullen-looking" while the Daily News reports that "his blank, bearded face shows nothing." (Tyra would be happy, though -- he's tilted his head slightly to the left to lengthen his neck, and we're pretty sure he's "smiling with his eyes.")

Fox News says simply that he "stares directly into the camera," and ABC News, which released the photo, refrains from commenting on the man's looks, focusing instead on what actually happened at Shahzad's arraignment on Tuesday afternoon. The highlights:

Shahzad uttered a faint "yes" when the judge asked if his affidavit of financial insufficiency was correct, meaning that Shahzad could not afford private counsel. Judge Francis then appointed public defender Julia Gatto to represent him. Shahzad's only request of the judge was that he be provided with halal meals -- food that follows Islamic dietary restrictions.

Since we're in the business of pointing out trends, dubious and otherwise, we would be remiss not to mention that other alleged and proven terrorists have sported the "mustache and beard look" with varying levels of success. Richard Reid of shoe-bombing infamy goes for a mussed yet sardonic aspect that reminds us of long days on the beach

, while bin Laden's salt-and-pepper face locks and pristine turban lend him a classic air.

American Adam Gadahn keeps his beard full but tidy, while Carlos the Jackal -- who virtually invented late-20th-century-style terrorism -- preferred a close chin-shave with extremely well-cultivated sideburns and hipster glasses.

Which just goes to prove, in fashion there are those who are meant to lead, and those who should simply follow, pick up a copy of Vogue now and again, and try to avoid wearing orange (it really tends to wash a person out).
