Fwd: Excessive Emailing Is Bad for the Environment
Apparently, it's time to reduce your Unsolicited Carbon Footprint -- spam emails release over 20 million tons of CO2 per year, approximately .3 grams per message, as this Woork Up infographic tells us. Though the exact science of the whole process isn't revealed, this is good validation against spammers on environmental principle -- be they your bleeding-heart Midwestern aunt or a pleading Nigerian prince. Here, we re-create the information from the infographic with examples of our own.
There are approximately 220 billion emails sent out per day, including the ones we love, like, you know... these:
But 183 billion of those per day are spam emails (the U.S. had the most, with 38 billion spam emails per day, imagine that). Like these:

With .3 grams of CO2 produced per useless, horrifying spam email, that's about 20,100,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year, which will be half the amount produced by Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull (remember that one?) after a whole year. A volcano's worth of CO2! That's a whole lot of overloaded spam boxes.
