Legendary Yankees Announcer Bob Sheppard Dead at 99
Nicknamed "The Voice of God," Sheppard started working for the New York Yankees in 1951, when the starting lineup included Yogi Berra and Joe DiMaggio. (The Yankees won the World Series that year, over the New York Giants.) Sheppard served as stadium announcer, chiefly calling players up to bat, until 2007, when he became ill. Sheppard worked in the NFL, as well, announcing for the New York Giants from 1956 until 2005. Sportswriter Buster Olney said of the announcing veteran, "Bob Sheppard was, in person, exactly as you imagined him to be: Distinguished, precise in his manner and in his words."
