• Hurricane Alex made landfall last night in Mexico, about 110 miles south of Brownsville, Texas. Thousands were evacuated to local shelters; three were killed in Acapulco. Alex is moving inland but has weakened to a tropical storm. [NPR]

• Portland police are reopening their investigation into the three-year-old sexual assault charges against Al Gore by a massage therapist. They did not say why. [Politico]

• A 43-year-old Staten Island man was arrested on hate-crime charges yesterday for calling Al Sharpton's National Action Network and leaving two voicemails full of racial slurs and insults (including referencing Sharpton's 1991 stabbing). He says he had been drinking. [SILive]
