Ahmed Sharif, Wounded Muslim Cab Driver, Receives $30,000 in Support

Ahmed Sharif, the Muslim taxi driver stabbed last week by a drunken passenger, will likely be unable to work for at least four months. "He can't even pick up his baby because of the wounds to his arms. He can't turn his neck," said Bhairavi Desai of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance.

According to Desai, Sharif is getting 2/3 of his salary, or about $30,000 a year, in workers' compensation, but as a union worker does not get health insurance or disability payments. And despite the taxi union urging donations to a fund for the family, at first there was barely enough money to cover baby formula for Sharif's 10-month-old.

Enter CNN. After they featured the story yesterday, donations to the New York Taxi Workers Alliance have raised $30,000 for Sharif, his wife, and his four children. Which is somewhat renewing to our faith in humanity after some of the other news we've been hearing lately.

You can still submit donations via the New York Taxi Workers Alliance website.
