At Least the Recession Has Made People Think Twice About Reproducing All Willy-Nilly
Hey, a benefit (we think) to this whole crappy mess of a Great Recession and jobless recovery: Maybe people are being convinced to let up on the kid-having, a little. Not that we mind the stroller set; we simply mind being surrounded and held captive and questioned by the stroller set about our lifestyle choices. Also, screaming babies on planes. 
Anyways! The U.S. birth rate has dropped for the second year in a row, which means we have to contend with a few less "Isabellas," "Edwards," and other Twilight-themed offspring.
Worry not about the U.S. population, however -- that still grew even though the baby-having went down 2.7 percent to 13.5 for every 1,000 people, which is the lowest in a century, according to numbers released by the National Center for Health Statistics.
Experts blame the recession, in part because more babies were born in 2007 (if you'll recall, the recession hit that fall) than any other year in U.S. history, but also say a drop in immigration could be a cause.
Interestingly, despite the recession there was a rise in births to women over 40, who may have decided they couldn't wait...though to be fair, they may be the only ones among us grown-up enough to be having babies, anyway.
