New Yorkers Protest Target's Donation to Anti-Gay Candidate
New Yorkers unhappy with Target's recent $150,000 donation to anti-gay-rights Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer gathered yesterday at the flagship Target in Brooklyn to protest. The rally, organized by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, City Councilmember Letitia James, and MoveOn.org was attended by more than 100 people, many of whom called Target's corporate headquarters from the street to protest the company's political spending. 
Target has apologized for their donation and say they'll conduct a review of policies for the future, but has not yet asked for the money back or matched the contribution with a donation to a pro-gay-rights candidate or group. A national boycott of Target is planned for this weekend.
Meanwhile, says de Blasio,
"We have a very simple message for corporations like Target when it comes to our democracy: hands off. There are 85 days until the November election, and my office will spend every one of them fighting keep corporate money from dominating our elections. I thank MoveOn for working here and in Washington to clean up our political system."
De Blasio was recently involved in negotiations with Goldman Sachs that ultimately led to their promise not to donate to elections, and is currently working on Google to do the same.
