Update, again: Per CNN, the gunman who shot a doctor at Johns Hopkins today, Warren Davis, 50, was not shot by police but apparently killed his mother and then himself.

Update: The gunman who shot a doctor at Johns Hopkins hospital in Baltimore and then barricaded himself inside a room has been shot and killed by officers, according to police.

Earlier: A gunman who shot a doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore today is now confined to an area of the hospital, but is not in custody, according to Jeremy Silbert, spokesman for the Baltimore police. Silbert told us that the doctor, who was shot in a patient area in the thoracic center in the Nelson building, is expected to survive. "The rest of the hospital is business as usual," he said. "The ER is open." (Good to know.)

Silbert wouldn't speculate as to the man's motive, but there had been reports in the media that the shooter may have been angry about his mother's surgery. We've also heard via Twitter that city dispatch has called for more help outside the eighth-floor location where the gunman is reported to be barricaded, possibly with his mother.

There will be a media briefing shortly; we'll update as we learn more.
