A residential fire last night at 1123 Avenue P in Midwood, Brooklyn, killed the eight-year-old son of a Brooklyn rabbi; NY1 reports the boy's name as Avigdor Krasny. The rabbi's five other children, who range in age from 1 to 10, are in Staten Island North Hospital. The one-year-old, a girl, is in critical condition, while the rest are stable.

Meanwhile, the New York Post tells the terribly tragic story of how the father ran into the house repeatedly to rescue his kids, but couldn't make it to the eight-year-old, who was trying to escape through a third-floor window. At the time of the fire, a group of 20-some people were celebrating the end of Sukkot in a tent on the property.

The cause of the fire is under investigation; one neighbor told NY1 that candles lit to observe the Jewish holidays may have led to the fire.
