Cabbie-Slashing SVA Student Gets Booze-Free Bail
Michael Enright, the 21-year-old School of Visual Arts senior charged with drunkenly slashing a Muslim cab driver in August, can leave jail on a $500,000 bail package, a Manhattan judge ruled today.
Enright has been in custody -- and even had a stint at Bellevue Hospital's psychiatric prison ward -- since the headline-grabbing incident on August 25. But today, a Manhattan Supreme Court judge approved a package that will let Enright out on bail until trial. (His next court date is December 8.)
Conditions include surrendering his passport; putting up his mother's Brewster, New York home as collateral; an 8 p.m. nightly curfew; alcohol rehab and psychiatric treatment; an electronic monitoring device; travel restrictions (he can't leave New York State); and he cannot enter "any bar or club that serves alcoholic beverages."
The district attorney's office had asked for Enright to be remanded without bail.
