Even the New Gap Logo Hates the New MySpace Logo

Amid an internet uproar about how bad the new Gap logo is -- and just after iTunes faced similar scrutiny for the updated iTunes 10 icon -- MySpace is getting in on the Any Press is Good Press action by releasing their own terrible new logo. TechCrunch describes it literally as "the word 'my' in Helvetica and then a symbol delineating a space." Commenters are bickering over whether the font is actually Helvetica, but let's all agree it doesn't matter. Not only is it un-Googleable and generally stupid looking, but the corporate line justifying the design is completely laughable:

"MySpace is a platform for people to be whatever they want, so we've decided to give them the space to do it," said MySpace VP of User Experience Mike Macadaan at the Warm Gun Design conference in San Francisco. Not a joke! A professional told this to a room full of other professionals. Also, "the blank space...will be filled with user generated artwork when users hover over it on the redesigned site." TechCrunch has a photo of the presentation, but when was the last time you were on MySpace anyway? (Aol. meanwhile is sitting relatively pretty.)

The battle of the logos, though, is mostly being fought through humorous, anthropomorphic Twitter accounts.

The iTunes 10 icon Twitter chimed in: "Kudos to the two agencies that convinced MySpace and Gap to go with the logos they did. They made bank on bullshit." But the Gap Logo Twitter gets the last laugh:

The MySpace rebuttal, like the logo, falls short:
