Hiram Monserrate in Trouble Again: This Time, It's the Feds

monserrateunhappy.jpg
Hiram Monserrate, the already scandal-scarred former Queens pol who spent much of last year as a defendant in the assault case against his girlfriend, is headed back to court today to face corruption charges.

The Daily News and NBC NY are reporting that the ex-state senator, ex-city councilman and recently failed assembly candidate surrendered to authorities this morning. Allegations are that he used tens of thousands of taxpayer dollars that were supposed to help Queens residents in his campaigns. The money was city council earmarks to a group he helped found called Libre -- Latino Initiative for Better Resources & Empowerment. There's a press conference scheduled for 1PM by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara and city investigations department chief Rose Gill Hearn.
