A Correction captain suffered broken facial bones and six other staffers were injured Tuesday afternoon in a brawl with inmates on Rikers Island.

The fight at the Robert N. Davoren Center started, correction sources say, when one inmate refused to be locked in his cell because he claimed to be ailing and wanted medication. The dispute turned violent and other inmates got involved.

The Correction Department tells us that six staffers were treated and released, and the seventh was held overnight for observation. Meanwhile, four inmates were treated and then transferred to punitive segregation. The Bronx District Attorney's office is said to be investigating.

The incident comes as stabbing and slashings are up so far this year over last year, correction sources said.
