Sex Survey Results In: Crazy Kids Are Using Condoms; Adults, Not So Much
There's a new sex study out from the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior -- in fact, it's considered the most comprehensive national study since 1994, surveying 5,865 people between the ages of 14 and 94. Though it was financed by the maker of Trojan condoms, they would like you to know they did not have influence over the way the study was conducted, except to help "phrase questions." Also, as usual, a sex survey pretty much takes the sexy out of sex...but that doesn't mean it's not fascinating.
One of the survey's primary determinations: Kids are officially smarter than adults when it comes down to it; in particular, sexually active teens are way better about using condoms than adults.
A vast majority of sexually active 14- to 17-year-olds -- 80 percent of boys and 69 percent of girls -- said they had used a condom the last time they had intercourse, compared with well under half of adults involved in casual liaisons.
The worst no-condom offenders: Men over 50.
Other interesting cocktail-party tidbits:
• Most men said the'd had an orgasm the last time they had sex, and 85 percent believed their partner had; but only two-thirds of the women said they had. So who's misleading whom?
• There are, apparently "41 possible combinations" (really?) that Americans routinely choose from in each sex episode, including masturbation, Christine O'Donnell. The five "major" sex acts, of course, were penile-vaginal intercourse, solo masturbation, partnered masturbation, oral sex, and anal sex.
• 7 percent of men and women identify as "other than heterosexual" -- but about twice that percentage had been involved in same-gender sex at some point in their lives.
Maybe we're not so Victorian as you might think, after all.
