Gay Takeaways From Election Night
The first openly gay winner of yesterday's election won long before the polls even opened on the East Coast...in Guam! A former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Guam, openly gay Benjamin Cruz won re-election to the Guam Senate.
Not nearly as far away but perhaps even more surprising, Jim Gray became the first openly gay mayor in Kentucky, the same state that sent Rand Paul to the U.S. Senate yesterday.
David Cicilline, the openly gay mayor of Providence, Rhode Island who narrowly won a three-way Democratic primary, will be the fourth out member of the House of Representative.
Here in New York State, the results are still quite unclear. Several gay political groups were fighting to oust New York State Senators who voted against gay marriage equality, but several Democrats they opposed (Cral Kruger, Shirley Huntley, Ruben Diaz) won their primaries. Democrat Tony Avello stands a chance of knocking out Republican Frank Padavan, but it's still too early to call that race.
Many LGBT groups breathed a sigh of relief that Carl Paladino's prospects dissipated as soon as the polls closed. Now they'll just have to deal with having him as the landlord of Buffalo's two biggest gay watering holes.
