Mayor Bloomberg Cutting Carbs, Pudding in Jail

Prisoners at Rikers Island will eat less thanks to Michael Bloomberg's budget cuts, which are now coming for carbohydrates. Instead of eight slices of whole wheat bread every day, inmates will get six as part of a $1.6 billion budget adjustment proposed this week, the Daily News is reporting. Chocolate and vanilla pudding and black pepper are also getting cut. "They should be properly fed, but the majority of them don't need those extra calories," one nutritionist told the paper. So how much money does it save?

$350,000 a year, or Michael Bloomberg's pinky ring. Plus 160 calories a day.

The average diet for male inmates is close to 3,000 calories, slightly more than recommended by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The city is also looking to cut costs by removing chocolate and vanilla pudding from the Rikers Island menu - and putting the kibosh on black pepper.

Under the new Bloomberg menu, inmates' calorie intake will be closer to the suggested 2,500 to 2,800 per day.

And don't forget the other, less delicious cuts, the News reminds at the end of their article: $650 million in school aid!
