Pope Wants Worldwide Vigil For Defenseless Embryos

Just in case you thought Pope Benedict XVI was starting to make too much sense with his support for condom use in certain cases (mostly for prostitutes so as not to spread AIDS), he came through on Saturday with an icy cold blast of conservatism. World leaders, he said in an address, should show more respect for embryos, which are not to be scienced around with haphazardly, but are actually "dynamic, autonomous individuals."

The Pope was marking the beginning of Advent and called for religious leaders around the world to use the service as a vigil for "nascent human life." More from the Associated Press via the Washington Post:

As if to reaffirm church teaching on the sacredness of human life, Benedict stressed the need to protect human life from the moment of conception in his homily Saturday.

Science itself has shown how autonomous the embryo is, how it interacts with the mother and develops in a coordinated and complex way, Benedict said.

"It's not an accumulation of biological material, but a new living being, dynamic and marvelously ordered, a new individual of the human species," Benedict said.

He went on to say that "even after birth the life of children continue to be exposed to abandonment, hunger, misery, sickness, abuse, violence and exploitation," which really has very little to do with the biological treatment of embryos, but is indeed pretty sad. Sorry for constantly letting you down, Pope.
