Ta-Nehisi Coates, a senior editor for The Atlantic specializing in culture, politics and social issues for the magazine, offers his take here, as both a journalist and father, about the practices exposed in the Voice's "NYPD Tapes" series.

Notably, Coates points out that practices like issuing tickets to satisfy a quota, stopping and frisking people under pressure from bosses, and discouraging complaints or minimizing them to make the crime stats look good, hurt relationships with the community and make police work even harder.

"What apologists for cops never understand is that each one of these stories is an assault on the brand," he writes. "It undermines their credibility, and ultimately their job."
