"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Repeal Moves Through Senate With 63-33 Vote
A 63-33 bipartisan vote early on Saturday afternoon allows the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which would allow openly gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the United States military, to advance to a final vote. The vote comes after a Pentagon report ruled that the military faces little to no risk if they were to end the Clinton-era policy. Just last week the repeal seemed in danger, with Republicans set to take over the House of Representatives in the new year, though the push for a vote on a repeal, unattached to a larger bill, seems to have saved the measure. A final vote is required from the Senate before the bill will be sent to President Obama to sign, with the repeal enacted in around 60 days. More info from the New York Times.
