Online Luxury-Brand Retailer Gilt Groupe Now Trying Its Luck With Cars

Gilt Group, the site that sends way too many emails for sometimes incredible shopping deals on fashion, makeup, and various travels and services, is now going automotive. In a partnership with Volkswagen, from Wednesday through Friday they've been giving giving subscribers the opportunity to buy a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta for only $5,995.

The car normally retails for $15,995, and they're selling one per day. This marks the moment that the web retailer has begun to sell virtually everything. On Wednesday, the sale was only available via Gilt's mobile apps.

The "flash sales" model that Gilt employs is pretty simple and effective. You see something that's on "crazy sale" and it makes you justify buying it, which is great with shirts and discount massages.... The question is, will it work with cars as more than just a special onetime marketing ploy?

Last chance for a cheap (or relatively so) ride is tomorrow at noon.
