Today marks the 30th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. He was infamously murdered by Mark David Chapman in New York City on December 8, 1980. This anniversary, people all over the world and the Web are mourning in different ways. Here are a few of our favorite things paying tribute to dear old John.

Rob Patterson, who was paid by Lennon for an audio recording of an interview, wrote this great essay about his early-life interaction with the man. This last graf is particularly poignant:

Yes, Yoko, I loved him dearly. I loved him because he was real. I loved him because he was the embodiment of all that I love about rock 'n' roll. I loved him because he was an idealist who held onto the best values of the late 1960s counter-cultural revolution, yet was also all too human with his many warts, foibles and even seeming hypocrisies that prompted Chapman to hunt John down and kill him. And today, I love John Lennon more than ever. And thank he and Yoko for the 15 bucks.

David Axelrod, one of Obama's top advisers, was asked about Lennon on Morning Joe today. He made a major gaffe when he admitted that he was drunk driving when he found out about Lennon's murder.

GQ put up this great candid shot on their Tumblr this morning:

And BBC America posted the original chilling radio broadcast announcing Lennon's murder on their website.

But maybe the best tributes are short and sweet. Seeing ((°J°)) all over Twitter today was a delight. (It's Lennon's famous insignia, duh!)
