Arizona Passes Bill Making It Illegal to Protest Near a Funeral

Following up on today's earlier post about the Westboro Baptist Church's intended picketing of the funeral service for Christina Taylor Green, the 9-year-old killed in the shooting in Tucson on Saturday, we've learned that Arizona legislators have approved emergency legislation that would make it a misdemeanor to protest within 300 feet of funeral or burial sites.

The House and Senate voted unanimously on the bill, which goes to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer today for signature. This may be the fastest bipartisan legislative action ever. The Washington Post reports "the Senate's committee hearing took just three minutes." So, gee, thanks Westboro-ites for helping us all agree on something!

However, it's unclear whether the legislation will actually impact Westboro, which continues to make enemies far and wide, by, among other things, "thanking God" for shooter Jared Lee Loughner. Ugh. Via the Washington Post, Shirley Phelps-Roper, daughter of Westboro "pastor" Fred Phelps, "said the prohibition wouldn't matter because church members plan to picket at one of two intersections more than 1,000 feet from the church where the girl's service will be held."

If a state can ban the sale of an album for blasphemy, why can not we do the same for those who protest for the sole purpose of spreading hatred and incitement to violence

The Phelps family has been crawling out of their hole to seize almost any opportunity to exploit tragedy for their own personal gain for years now. They are a family of lawyers, and they are running a scam. They use the same basic formula that Scientology and many others have used:

1) Hide under the guise of religion

2) Make money

They're not out there to spread a message, they're out there to find lawsuits.

They want people to react, then they sue them for "violating their rights". They are probably happy Arizona passed the Bill, now they can fight it in court. That's how they make money.

Will Westboro Baptists be thankful and see it as sent from God, when some Arizonite with a gun (and they all do) bushwacks 'em at the freeway protests?

The Phelps family (that's really all Westboro Baptist Church is) lives off our hate. They really are the most mentally-ill people on the planet.

They also love injunctions like this because they get to go to court and fight against it under 1st Amendment rules. (They usually win, because no matter how repugnant the message, it is free speech.)

Thank you for not posting a picture of the Westboro Crackhead church. I'm sorry, at thistime, in Arizona, picketing a 9-year-old's funeral is just inciting violence. I wish and hope that all media would come to an agreement to stop showing pictures or video of them, and just let us know when and where. Those of us who are dedicated to shielding those innocent people from the despicable hate speech, WILL show up.I pray constantly for the poor children they subject these utter lies to.Honestly, I wonder, if a state can BAN the sale of an ALBUM due to profanity, why can't we do the same for those protesting with the SINGLE purpose of spreading hate and inciting violence?

And thank you media for giving these people the publicity they seek. The only people that would have noticed them picketing would have been themselves.
