Bedbugs Are Biting 7 Percent More New Yorkers

Once there's a T-shirt, you know it's real.
Bedbugs. They are terrifying. They are gross. They are everywhere. And they are continuing to reproduce with a vengeance. According to the latest stats from New York City's Department of Housing, Preservation, and Development, via the Wall Street Journal, bedbug complaints in city residences have increased 7 percent in the last year, far outpacing inflation, along with our hospitality.

In 2010, there were 4,846 violations and 13,472 complaints, up from 4,811 and 12,594 in 2009.

Further, just because bedbugs haven't been officially complained about doesn't mean they're not there -- people with infestations tend to keep quiet, in many cases (bedbug stigma!), while attempting to battle the bugs on their own, and may not file a complaint even if they tell their landlord, co-op board, or building manager.

Meanwhile, according to Glamour magazine, 57 percent of guys would still go home with a girl who admits to having bedbugs, which means, pending some full-body-bedbug-condom, the spread is probably only just beginning.

So...is it time to buy the T-shirt, yet?

Maybe so, maybe so. But once you have had them, you never forget them. My entire apartment unit was infected was bedbugs 4 years ago. Getting rid of them was the most horrible thing I have ever gone through. It took four months, two visits from a pest control service, cleaning and steaming every surface in my apartment, new mattresses and virtually four months of sleepless nights. I never want to go through that again. I am lucky; there are reportedly people who suffer severe, permanent psychological trauma from bed bug bouts and many people take a lot longer than it took me to get a handle on the problem.

Bed bugs are biting 7% more New Yorkers? Many such bites go unnoticed, and other bites attributed to bed bugs are caused by other villains. These reported numbers are all but useless, as they lack objectivity. Using terms such as "terrifying" and "gross" simply add to the media frenzy and incite fear. Bed bugs may be considerably annoying, but they're of far less significance to health than are mosquitoes.
