Mike Bloomberg Rallies for Tighter Gun Control
Following the shooting in Tucson on Saturday, Mayor Mike Bloomberg, along with Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Long Island Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), announced their support for strengthening national gun control laws at a City Hall press conference on Tuesday. 
Their proposal includes the appointment of a permanent head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) as well as "lengthening the amount of time that ex-drug users are prohibited from buying guns from one year to five years," according to the Observer. The ATF has not had a permanent director since 2006.
The mayor criticized lax gun regulations, telling NY1 that the "system that's supposed to protect us from dangerous and deranged people has failed."
Congressman King also unveiled a bill that would make it a felony offense to carry a gun within 1,000 feet of senior government officials.
A separate bill sponsored by Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) and New Jersey Senator Frank Lautenberg seeks to limit the high capacity magazines like the one allegedly used by Jared Lee Loughner in Tucson on Saturday. McCarthy and Lautenberg did not attend the mayor's press conference.
