• Yesterday in New York a suicidal man jumped from building in Midtown Manhattan, only to be saved by the pile of garbage, not picked up on account of the blizzard of '10, which he landed on. He is in critical but stable condition. [NYDN]
• Garbage pickups resume! Christmas tree pickups, too, but not recycling. [NYP]
• 2,000 red-winged blackbirds dropped from the sky on New Year's Eve in Beebe, Arkansas. Officials think they were killed by, most likely, either fireworks or hail. [Pat's Papers]
• East 3rd Street has a red-tailed hawk, which is keeping away the pigeons quite admirably. [EV Grieve]
• In a deal with Goldman Sachs and a Russian investor, Facebook is $500 million richer and, with a new worth of $50 billion, has more money than eBay, Yahoo, and Time Warner, or, according to the Borowitz Report, "is now worth as much as Oprah's little finger." This gives Zuckerberg and Co. "more firepower to steal away valuable employees, develop new products and possibly pursue acquisitions -- all without being a publicly traded company." [NYT]
• Governor Cuomo is now in office. One of his first acts of business is to call a one-year salary freeze for all state workers. This is part of an emergency fiscal plan he's expected to unveil later this week. [NBC NY]
• David Arquette is starting out the year with a stint in rehab. He told Howard Stern, "When I drink, I become a maniac." We hear you, and wish you the best. [MTV]
