New Jersey Cops Need to Cool It With the Steroids
Who polices the police? In New Jersey, it's lawmakers who are moving to "crack down" on steroid use among police and firefighters, who are more obsessed with staying fit than everyone else in New Jersey. The measure, introduced as a state assembly bill on Monday, would make it so "uniformed public employees" could be randomly tested for anabolic steroid use and would be subjected to additional tests before being prescribed steroids or growth hormone. Who's really going to argue against this one?
Via Reuters, where it's noted that cops should probably avoid anything that makes them more violent, just in case:
Law enforcement steroid use is a problem around the country and, given that steroid use can cause aggression, can invite problems for police, said Larry Gaines, chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice at California State University in San Bernadino, California."Aggression is not very common but nonetheless it's a possible problem," Gaines said. "If it does occur, you could see lawsuits against police departments regarding citizens injured from steroid rage."
In addition to more general concerns about aggression, the move by lawmakers comes in the wake of a huge bust, in which a local doctor "supplied hundreds of police and firefighters with anabolic steroids, human growth hormones and other muscle-building drugs." Some point to "competitiveness" as a reason for the problem with certain departments valuing biceps and bench-pressing a tad too much. How else are you supposed to prove you're a man?
