New York City Is Full of Suspicious Packages

Both Penn Station and the New York offices of Bank Hapoalim in midtown Manhattan were the sites today of a "suspicious package" search, though both alarms proved to be false. At gates 13 and 14 in Penn Station, cops came to check out something vaguely worrisome and eventually called things "all clear" without ever evacuating the area. At Hapoalim on 46th Street, a "6-inch by 3-inch package was deemed suspicious because it was wrapped in bubble wrap and addressed to an officer...but the name was misspelled and there was no return address." It turned out to be an electronic greeting card from a headhunting firm. (That's business slang.) The mail room was evacuated, but now everyone is back to work. And for the record: "On an average day, New York City police get 90 to 100 reports of suspicious packages." [NBC NY]
