On Martin Luther King Jr. Day's Eve, Brooklyn Protest Against Recent Shootings of Five Teens

On the eve of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Brooklyn residents, clergy, and community leaders held an angry rally in Fort Greene protesting the most recent outbreak of violence in the borough.

Among the tragedies prompting the Sunday rally, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the face Saturday in front of the Seth Low Houses in Brownsville. That followed the shooting and wounding of four teens on Friday at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene after a basketball game.

"[We're] asking people to stand up to gun violence," Mike Tucker, whose oldest son was shot to death in 2005, told Channel 11. "How many people have to die?" The crowd chanted "Enough is enough!"

And not only in Brownsville and Fort Greene. On Friday afternoon, John Gilliam, 23, was shot to death on Tompkins Avenue in nearby Bed-Stuy.

Why when politicians talk about gun regulation and gun violence, do they never recall how many crimes are committed with stolen or illegally bought guns? The black market in gun sales is at least as big and dangerous as the legal gun market, and is much harder to police or legislate out of existence. Moreover, even if gun manufacturers were to switch to a "smart gun" manufacturing process, in which a gun would only fire after ID recognition of a legal owner (various patents for such recognition technology being already in the works) there would still be so many conventional ballistic weapons in circulation that it would be years before aspiring criminals would find it hard to score an illegal old-fashioned weapon on the grey or black market.
