Pac-Man to Get Reality Series and Develop Drinking Problem Stat

At some point in the future that we can't even imagine right now, so imbued are we in our own 2011 "essence" with its tweets and Facebook friends and horrible unscripted but scripted "reality" series, people will look back and reflect and query, "When was it that 'reality TV' jumped the shark?" (because that terminology will never die). And some smart person will inevitably say, "When Pac-Man got his own reality show." Yes, we are coming upon this historical moment now, friends. Write about it in your electronic blog-diaries, or Tumblrs, or whatever!

Remember when Google did that super-cool fun for a moment Google Pac-Man Doodle on his 30th birthday; that one you could actually play? Perhaps that inspired this -- or maybe it's just that Pac-Man and his buddies have been sitting around for years now talking about how much more interesting their lives are than those Housewives of Bumblefuck-Wherever.

But whatever the reason for it, this is happening. According to Deadline.com,

Merv Griffin Entertainment has teamed with leading game maker Namco Bandai Games America, which owns the Pac-Man brand, to develop an unscripted series based on the hugely popular video game. This marks the first major foray into TV for Pac-Man whose only previous TV presence was a short-lived animated series in the early 1980s.

The Pac-Man reality series is envisioned as a "big, crazy Wipeout-type event with a lot of energy," said Merv Griffin's president of TV Roy Bank. "The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world's biggest game of tag to television."

What is Pac-Man? How does one bring him to life? Tag? These are the existential questions we face before we turn off our computers and pour ourselves a drink.
