Charges Brought Against Jared Lee Loughner

Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old who shot Representative Gabrielle Giffords in the head yesterday while killing six others and injuring 13, has had five criminal charges filed against him in federal court. Loughner has been charged with two counts of murder in the first degree, two counts of attempted murder, and one count of attempting to kill a member of Congress.

Also: according to the Wall Street Journal, surveillance video at the scene of the crime captured footage of the shootings.

Also: during a search of Loughner's home, police found a letter in a safe addressed to Loughner from Giffords' office, thanking him for attending a "Congress on Your Corner" event in 2007 like the one where Loughner shot her. This, plus an envelope with the words "I planned ahead," "My assassination," and "Giffords," as well as what seems to be Loughner's signature. Macabre stuff.
