Sarah Palin is Now the Face of the Arizona Shooting and a Victim of "Blood Libel"

Sarah Palin: "America's Enduring Strength" from Sarah Palin on Vimeo.

Six people were killed when Jared Loughner started shooting in Arizona on Saturday, while Rep. Gabrielle Giffords remains hospitalized. Sara Palin was also a victim and she wants everyone to know. In her first public statement on the matter, save a brief Twitter and Facebook posting, Palin only uses the word "I" seven times, but she's the real subject of her own message. "No words can fill the hole left by the death of an innocent, but we do mourn for the victims' families as we express our sympathy," she writes. Then a thousand additional words, none of which add up to much.

Not an elected official, and not yet even a candidate, Palin responded with words and video because the salivating media wanted -- even needed -- her to. As a leader, she did not impress. For spectacle, she did not disappoint.

After the requisite sympath, Palin gets to her point: "Like many, I've spent the past few days reflecting on what happened and praying for guidance," she writes. "After this shocking tragedy, I listened at first puzzled, then with concern, and now with sadness, to the irresponsible statements from people attempting to apportion blame for this terrible event."

Then comes the big one, to be quoted for days (at least -- "death panels," anyone?) to come. The emphasis belongs to us:

If you don't like a person's vision for the country, you're free to debate that vision. If you don't like their ideas, you're free to propose better ideas. But, especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.

Politicians used to work out issues "with dueling pistols," she reminds us. We must condemn violence, but we must still fight, says Palin.

And we will not be stopped from celebrating the greatness of our country and our foundational freedoms by those who mock its greatness by being intolerant of differing opinion and seeking to muzzle dissent with shrill cries of imagined insults.

You can read the rest here or if you feel like looking at her face, watch the video above.

UPDATE: Salon decided to check the Wikipedia for "blood libel." Palin's choice of words is unsettling, at least:

Blood libel (also blood accusation) refers to a false accusation or claim that religious minorities, almost always Jews, murder children to use their blood in certain aspects of their religious rituals and holidays. Historically, these claims have-alongside those of well poisoning and host desecration-been a major theme in European persecution of Jews.

The irony is that Palin constantly uses the same type of rhetoric to demean or diminish Democrats, liberals, people of different religions, and anyone else that she sees as different. During the Presidential campaign the FBI had to ask her to tone down her rhetoric at rallies, because the threats against Barack Obama were increasing. To simplify for Mrs. Palin, she needs to start treating people like she wants to be treated.

Okay, so this guy didn't spray the event with bullets and kill and wound many people for political reasons. He was a wacko with no backing. But there are a group of people who openly and repeatedly urge people to openly carry guns, to use there Second Amendment Rights, to lock and load, to target (using gunsights) people who don't agree with them. So when someone targets a political opponent, what are we to think? If "John" is seen and heard to threaten "Mary" with violence again and again and again and "Mary" is violently attacked, would "Simon" be the first person we look at? I don't think so.

I find it much more unsettling that anyone at all has to look up what "blood libel" means.

I expect more from some than from Sarah Palin. But that's just me.

This may well be the first time in her life that she's uttered, or at least read out loud, the word 'purport'.

The congresswoman is Jewish. Good job Sarah, keep blaming the victim.

Failed governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin, quit that job before she got fired. She was determined to have violated Alaska's Ethics Act in 2008 and was about to get her hat handed to her by the Alaskan legislature when she quit rather than go through extensive hearings.

I'm surprised people haven't associated Palin's remarks with David Wynn Miller's "grammer" consipracy theories like they have with Mr. Loughner. From the odd grammer and inappropriate use of phrases ("foundational freedoms"?) Mrs. Palin uses, it appears that she is trying to manipulate the American Public through expropriation of the language.

Blood Libel - She knew what that meant before she used it! She's got writers she uses and those writers are FAR RIGHT WING!!! They put in certain code words that other whack-jobs will recognize and use to create an "echo chamber."

Her husband, Todd Palin and she are or were members of an organization which was modeled partly on the Posse Comitatus movement which is based on the teachings of "Christian Identity" minister William P. Gale's Identity Church movement - the basic theology of which is the "Redemption Movement" which Miller is a part of. These connections are loose but these bigoted, racist ideas are part of the whole "Patriot" movement, which is discussed by the Southern Poverty Law Center's publications.

Gale identified the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution as the act that converted sovereign citizens into federal citizens by agreeing to a contract to accept benefits from the federal government.

Ask Palin if she supports repealing the 14th Amendment - she'll say yes. It's not because of the illegal aliens as much as the creation of a "federal" citizen the Patriot groups say it creates. This is what they're after and they're fanning the flames of bigotry by getting normal people to hate dishwashers and landscapers.

Some of the ultra-conservative left-wingers in politics and the media have accused Palin of being at least partly responsible for the tragic shooting in Tucson. So she has a right -- even a responsibility -- to defend herself and not "shut up," even if your brain is too small to process her words.

Many lefties care nothing about the horrifying events on Saturday. Starting with Paul Thugman's blog a couple of hours after the shooting, they've shown over and over that their goal is to use this event to achieve political goals -- gun control, suppression of free speech through the "Fairness" Doctrine, etc. They care much less about the facts and the people involved.

On Good Morning America today, one of the shooter's friends said: "He did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn’t listen to political radio. He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right." How much will that statement slow down the left-wing haters as they build their goofy case for retribution against Sarah Palin and other conservatives? Not much, because their goal in life is to act goofy, talk goofy, be a goof. What other explanation can there be for a Princeton professor and NY Times columnist like Thugman to claim politics was involved before anyone knew anything about the shooter or his motives? "Libel" is not a strong enough word for what the left is currently trying to do to anyone who disagrees with or questions them.

I didn't think it was possible to be a ultra conservative and be a left winger at the same time, Hillary, but hey, that's just me I guess. How do people know what the shooter watched if he was such a loner. It's not a coincidence that he targeted a politician who didn't answer one of his inane questions at a previous rally. This guy had some kind of weird philosophy that could easily be influenced by people like Sara Palin who encourages people to lock and load and puts a bullseye on all the districts that the tea party is targeting. I've heard her excuse for this, and it doesn't wash. This country is in one mess and I can't for the life of me, see how this kind of rhetoric can help the situation. By the way, I am a registed independent and a former republican so don't give me that crap about being a liberal. I try to be a thinking human being who tries to see both sides of any situation.

Exactly how does the "Fairness Doctrine" suppress free speech? Please be specific. Thank you.

Yeah, because this all happened in a fucking vacuum. Rightwingers only preach tolerance and love for the gov't and people that disagree with them politically. They never, ever, demonize and dehumanize.

If there is a Mitt Romney / Sara Palin presidential ticket I will certainly vote for them BECAUSE I see the liberal left (democrats) trying through govt. to control people- I think they are part of the Anti-Christ reign that's coming. As the Bible proclaims--- Get your house in order !

Luckydog38
Luckydog38

Get your house in order is a mandate to the individual child of God. This being done, the rest will fall in place. God has no need for Gov.s, in fact, he let the Government Crucify him. This is NOT the avenue the Lord tends to choose for change. This is the worlds weak attempt to have control of something that they do not hold the reigns on.

Have you heard the proverb "You reap what you sow"? Sara Palin and many others recently have sown some very vicious seeds to promote their views and unfortunately whether we admit it or not, there are consequences to our actions. I don't think she is directly responsible for what happened in Arizona but we should never assume that what we say is not influencing others.

I am no fan of Sarah Palin, and yes, I wish she would shut the f*ck up. But blaming her for this tragedy is ridiculous.

Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind.

All of her and the rest of the Teabagger assholes with their fucking guns and violent imagery set the table for crazy people to act out on their fantasies.

This shit didn't happen in a vacuum, no matter how hard the right and their media whore pets try to wish it away.

Wow, the previous comments are from some very angry people. What makes people so angry with Sara Palin? She used the word "Blood libel" refers to a false accusation. I think there was false accusation. I never hated any politician as much as these hatters hate her.

Sara Palin is so disengenous about this whole thing. She knows that she is one of those who has used visuals on the internet and everywhere else to whip up the public perception of the government and the Democratic Party. She needs to just "SHUT UP" for once in her life and leave us in peace. What a disgrace this woman is!

museumman

I was wishing very much Ms Palin would just be quiet on connec tions of her to the Arizona horror show There are times when responding so soon just will bring her more grief than is necessary. But Sara is sometimes unable to bring self attention. I do not really blame her.But she costs me this much: I am very wary of her ability as a mature leader. from Paul in snowy Maine
