Wyoming High Schooler Comes Out at Assembly

"I didn't choose to be gay," says Kayla, a high school senior at Maria Carrillo High School in Wyoming, during an assembly for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with the theme of "Breaking the Silence." It's easy to tell she's a drama kid even before she speaks frankly about her first sexual feelings -- the "electricity" that ran through her body when she saw a girl on stage in a play as a child -- and before she remembers the Rent production where she first voiced her feelings. "I'm afraid of losing friends and losing loved ones," she admits. "This speech will change my life forever, but I hope that my words can change more." Get beyond the schlocky music at the beginning and listen to the woman speak. [AlterNet]

"Actually, I totally chose to be gay. I just didn't want to be from Wyoming. But they'll have to make me leave now, right?"
