Pentagon Creates Bird Spy Cameras in Latest Sign of Robot Takeover

If you thought Watson (the Jeopardy computer) was going to rule our puny human asses alone, now Watson has his minions. The Pentagon has just developed a robotic hummingbird designed for spying called the Nano Hummingbird. The New York Post has the specifics on the spybots: "the Nano Hummingbird, at 19 grams, weighs less than an AA battery. But, given that hummingbirds are not that common in many urban settings, the next prototype likely will be modeled on a sparrow." (Hm, how about a pigeon?)

We hate to break it to the Pentagon, but the flying spy camera isn't even that original of an idea. Geniuses on YouTube have been showing off flying spy cams for years. Look at this one that can be controlled by an iPhone:

Still, the stealthiness of these new cameras does seem pretty awesome. We think the Pentagon should "put a bird on it" already and fire all of their spies:

A straightforward example where wireless greatly surpasses the excellence and performance of traditional CCTV is using it with moving trains. Wireless CCTV is quickly gaining approval as the security or monitoring measure of choice in such environments.

Brill idea - you could fly it over the fence and see what your neighbour is going. Local spy cctv style! LOVE IT  8-)

This is sneaky! I like the idea of using a pigeon.... Although does using a bird mean that the flying is generated by a flapping of the wings or using air jets? As a key criteria of a spy camera surely or cctv would be that it is stable and a flapping bird is not necessarily stable...

I don't think robot birds are really necessary, I think the airborne spy cameras around at the moment can be just as stealthy and just as effective, and in fact easier to control. I guess if you really want complete stealth then a bird robot would be the way to go, but I agree that a pigeon type is needed, not a sparrow and definitely not a hummingbird.
