Chandra Levy's Killer Gets 60 Years in Jail

Ingmar Guandique, the convicted murderer of Chandra Levy, the 24-year-old government intern whose relationship with former California Congressman Gary Condit made for a media frenzy upon her disappearance in 2001, has been sentenced to 60 years in jail. Guandique, a Salvadoran immigrant, was spared life in prison but given double the minimum by the judge, who believed him "dangerous to society, particularly to women," and "essentially a sexual predator," but perhaps not the absolute worst.

Judge Fisher said. "The question is whether I conclude that he's the worst of all the worst. I come close to that conclusion, but I don't quite reach it."

Via the Washington Post, Guandique continued to deny the murder upon sentencing:

Before the punishment was handed down, Guandique stood up, paused, wiped his eyes and addressed the Levy family.

"I am sorry for what happened to your daughter," he said. "But I had nothing to do with it. I am innocent."

Condit's political career was basically ruined by the negative publicity associated with Levy's murder investigation and his relationship with her. The case, which went unsolved for years, was finally closed in 2009 when Guandique -- who was serving time for attacks on other women in Rock Creek Park, where Levy was disappeared -- was charged.
