City Council Passes Strict Smoking Ban

New York City Council has passed a bill that prohibits smoking in public parks, beaches, boardwalks, pools, playgrounds, and pedestrian plazas. Smokers may need a cigarette to calm their nerves after reading this news.

The ban will permit smoking in the parking lots and adjacent sidewalks of public parks.

Some council members expressed feelings that this law doesn't go far enough and that a wider public ban is needed in the future. (They will likely have the support of Mayor Bloomberg, who has previously stated his desire for such legislation.)

The law will take effect on June 2nd of this year, which would be a great time to enjoy a refreshing menthol on the beach.
