Gabrielle Giffords Asked For Toast
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head only one month ago in the Arizona killing spree of six others, has healed enough to speak; she asked for toast at breakfast time. "Yes, that's accurate," Giffords' chief of staff, Pia Carusone, told MSNBC. The moment occurred Monday morning at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston, Texas, where Giffords is working toward rehabilitation.
As exciting, and potentially miraculous, as every tiny piece of news is when it comes to Giffords' recovery, doctors and her family urge everyone to take it one moment at a time:
"The doctors say she is recovering at lightning speed considering her injury but they aren't kidding when they say this is a marathon process," Kelly wrote on Facebook. "There are encouraging signs every day, though."
It's hard to ask the media not to cheer at each encouraging moment, as emotions about the tragedy in Arizona have spread far and wide, but that's exactly the instinct New York's Daily Intel so eloquently warned about a few weeks back in "This Time, for Gabrielle Giffords's Sake, Let's Not Get Ahead of Ourselves." Chris Rovzar writes:
But now we're doing the same thing all over again: prewriting the Giffords narrative in a way that is almost certain to gloss over a difficult reality. Her recovery from the gunshot wound to her head has been described as a miracle. And thus far it has been -- as is her very survival. But her complete recovery is very, very far from certain. And the press's breathless coverage of every daily improvement has led to expectations that will almost surely lead to disappointment.
So while the toast anecdote may bring a smile, it's important to keep it in perspective as another step forward on a sadly long road.
