In Support of Jack Weppler's Meme-Making Ex-Girlfriend

weppler.jpg
Over the weekend, Gawker told the story of Jack Weppler, whose angry or hilarious (both?) ex-girlfriend ran a corny picture of the kid through Meme Generator, laying mocking, sometimes offensive phrases over his face about his fashion sense or aspirations. Then the whole internet got in on the action. Weppler's mom came to his defense, begging Google to do something about it. Gawker encouraged Weppler to "Shrug, laugh and move on," while Urlesque says they aren't sure if "his ex is just crazy." But we're going to go ahead and say it: she won.

The pictures were mostly deleted, but because of how Google's cache works, you can still see some on image search. Here's the plea from Weppler's mom:

My minor son's ex-girlfriend took a copyrighted picture of him (we own copyright) and uploaded it more than 60 times to a website. On each image she wrote slanderous, defamatory and pornographic captions. The webmaster of the site states he removed the images 6 weeks ago, but Google Search still shows all the images. My son is so stressed out and embarrassed and we've done everything we can to get images off of Google.

Yes, cyber-bullying can be a very real thing. Additionally, some of the variations on the meme include inexcusable and unfunny homophobic statements. But assuming we can chalk those up to anonymous internet trolls and not the ex, she kind of did a cool (and crazy!) thing by taking the tools available to her and just clowning the guy who seemingly hurt or wronged her somehow. (And the fact that the guy has a professional head shot in the first place doesn't exactly inspire sympathy.)

She probably intended it for a few of her closest friends to giggle at, but the reason we're still reading about this story is because in attempt to cover it up, the Weppler family went about it all wrong. Patience could have been a virtue. Instead, it's everywhere, demonstrating that the Wepplers are ignorant of how the internet works, and more specifically, the Streisand effect: "a primarily online phenomenon in which an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of perversely causing the information to be publicized more widely and to a greater extent than would have occurred if no contrary action had been attempted."

The pictures are (or were, at least) slowly disappearing. His Google image search looks like this now, whereas it used to be a straight flush:

Screen shot 2011-02-07 at 5.16.58 PM.png

But take a look at his standard Google results. The girl might get grounded, but she'll have a hell of a story when she gets to college. Weppler, on the other hand, will probably never be an actor or a model. And he'd have to be a pretty successful one to get his Google back.

Over a year ago I sat back and watched as the internet blogs ran feverishly with this completely distorted “story”. One of my best friends was blamed for something that she did NOT do. It made me so angry but her family asked that we stay out of it, that the truth would come out, so I did as they wanted and said nothing! Now that over a year has passed, I think it’s safe to speak on behalf of one of the classiest people I have ever met; AKA- “Ex-girlfriend”. You see, a  friend of “ex-girlfriend” and mine (I’ll call her “D” ), was messing around on the computer one night. She came across this website called Meme Generator where you upload pics and write captions. Without “Ex-girlfriend” knowing, she uploaded a pic of Weppler from facebook and added some captions. “D” knew a lot about Weppler from stories “Ex-girlfriend” had told us. NONE of the captions “D” had written were “slanderous or pornographic”!! Just some basic, mostly lyrical, captions.  Anyway, “D” totally intended these pics on Meme Generator to be an INSIDE joke between a few of us. She never realized the whole world could view them.  A day or 2 went by, and next thing you know, there were about 40 memes. This guy must have had a lot of enemies because there were a lot of unknown people making memes, based on the 40 that suddenly appeared.   (We later found out that there were so many people from the guy’s hometown who thought it was funny and fessed up months later that they had made a bunch of the memes.) “D’ took the pics off of Meme Generator as soon as she saw that people were adding to them.  A month or so went by, and then we heard that the pics from Meme Generator were on Google. “D” immediately contacted Google and within a month, ALL but 5-6 memes were GONE!! Then, a month later, blogs like this one started to surface. It was really odd. It was like someone intentionally went to the social media to bring attention to a very common, and boring story. It was very suspicious that internet blogs only picked up this story when thousands of memes are made every day of the week. People complain to Google 24/7 and only “this guy’s story made it to the blogs? If people commenting on the blogs had half a brain, they would have asked why a “minors” name, (even though he was really 19), was allowed to appear in stories and blogs all over the internet. And like I said, why only this guy? This stuff happens all the time. Kids are always messing around with sites like meme generator at my school.  It’s the age of the internet. I felt bad for “Ex-girlfriend.” She got blamed for the whole thing.  “D” wanted to come forward but in just a few weeks, the story died. I realize nobody will ever see this post (let’s face it- no one is gonna be Googling this guy’s name), but I had to set the record straight!!!

If she uploaded the photos of a minor and wrote pornographic captions, then she should be sued under child pornography laws.

How would you feel if your daughter's photos were posted all over the Internet with libellous captions, by a bitter ex-boyfriend?

his must have inherited his tool characteristics from his buttinsky mother ... she tried to sound threatening by talking about copyright, the naive dimwit

doesn't she realize that by Mommy writing whiney little grovel-grams the kid only comes off worse? before we just thought he was a tool, now we think he's a tool who can't fight his own battles

someone should get a picture of Mommy and turn her into a meme, too ... any takers?

I agree with John. If a guy uploaded slanderous material about a girl we would never hear the end of this story. Yes, in all honesty the story is funny, but it's a two way street. So, the next time a guy posts something offensive about the opposite sex, we should get a free pass.

most of these were not offensive. if you know anything about musical theater you'll realize they were just dumb references to rent and beauty and the beast.

Hmm..the cracks in mom story starts..apparently the minor is between 18-20 years of age (16 is a minor mom), the website was taken off 6 weeks ago, and with the publishing of all these articles unknown person(s) created a new one, thanks to mom, no doubt, the picture was never uploaded by any single person 60 times...and wait for it...it wasn't even the girlfriend who did this. I guess mom thought it sounded better when she wrote to google. Shame, how was any of this picked up without proof?! Oh, right hoping to bring publicity to her "minor" son who wants to act but can't handle the pressures of the public. Toughen up "guy".

Yes, it's the guy's mother's fault, not the cunt ex-girlfriend. Thanks for that nugget of wisdom. Also: you're a twat, Joe.

News flash. If you want to become a public figure (i.e. a performer), your image is basically public domain. Maybe mom should've taught him how to treat a girl right.

Maybe Jack could go into comedy - he already has internet mini-fame. Much more than most beginners can aspire for. His picture is up there still as of last night on the meme generator with his real name just like Chuck Norris! But you don't see Chuck Norris's mommy complaining about the comments the internet community thinks of. It sounds like his mom needs to grow a sense of humor..

Uhmmm his name is out there because the girl used his name with his picture... that is the whole problem - did you read the article?

For now we trust that Google has eradicated the ‘Jack Weppler’ meme, or at least dealt with it to the best of its ability, but there is only way to find out isn’t there?

The author of this post supporting such a dickish move by the scorned girl proves that he, too, is a dick. How did he ever get a job writing for anything other than the Pennysaver? What a douche.

Oh wow this story is now in Corriere della sera, Spanish, Brazilian and Chinese newspapers. At least when he applies to college Harvard'd be like, "Jack Weppler oh yeah every man's prison dream." BTW, his mother copyrighted her son's head shot? Just be quiet, woman. Oh wait. Too late.

Haven't seen anybody get this story right yet. Considering how quickly everyone's jumped onboard to characterize this as some sort of honorable or well-planned play from the young woman or even a publicity stunt for the young man, my guess is you won't get the actual story ever, because you don't want the real story, you want the one that sounds snarkier and trendier for your blog.

I actually think Joe was more objective then some of the others. Everyone is placing blame on the girlfriend, when there have been posts on other sights that it wasn't her that he and his mother are blaming her. And I'm actually believing that is the case. Someone probably created the meme of him, and removed it not knowing google cached it. Why does everyone have to be so cynical and assume anyone intentionally did that to bully the kid, it probably was a joke. But the person to blame is whoever brought this to light as of recent. The truth always comes out in the wash, just as Lauren said earlier.

Joe Coscarelli you're just another fucktard like all of the other media hacks running with this story incapable of writing anything meaningful. You think cyber bullying is funny when it happens to someone else. Let's see how "cool" you think this is when it happens to you or one of your family members. And yes, Joe, running with this story is contributing to the harassment of an individual which you makes *you* guilty of harassment too. Tell me, do you always take pleasure in kicking someone when they're down? What a dick weed.

I've got to be honest, I'm gay, and I didn't think any of that stuff was homophobic. In no way was it actively hateful. And while offensive to the guy, 1) we don't know what he did to her that made her so mad, 2) none of it was actually that bad, and most importantly 3) this won't effect his life. Within a month, nobody will even remember this story. But admit it, everyone has a dream of the horrific emotional crucification of an ex, and she got it; while not morally sound, she's like the new Jetblue diva, only of crappy relationships.

The author of this piece is a real scumbag for his comments here. Somehow this girl should be congratulated for doing this to her ex? As if he deserves it for being an actor with a professional headshot? What do you know about these people? Saying that the girl in question did a "cool thing" for him having "wronged" her is nonsense. What do you know about the story? Did he hurt her or was it the other way around? Were you there? And mocking him for having a headshot is just childish -- how do you know that she doesn't also have a professional headshot? To say he will never be an actor or model is a vicious comment that just shows that even asshole hacks like you can get published.

Question is: DID she do it? People never think like that anymore. We rush to conclusions based on what the media feeds us.I know first hand!I was once falsely accused of something and it sucked for me for a long time. But the truth ALWAYS comes out!The jury is out until all the facts are in on this one!

Maybe the reason his name is out there is because they WANT him to be noticed. How much you want to bet that he ends up on some talk show, gets offered walk-on part or a modeling job because people feel sorry for him?

If HE did this to HER, there would be protest rallys for this cyber bully monster to go to jail. But SHE did it to HIM, so aint it cute? Gotta love the liberal slant on EVERYTHING.

He should post "shots" of her on the same sites. Im sure with all the hardware for picture taking, he has some "shots" of her that would make her blush a bit. Perhaps a large billboard even now that would be funny.

You're so wrong. You're just speculating. What's your proof? I am very close to this story as someone who knows both parties. Your "facts", like those of many posters here, are just speculation. Sorry, but you didn't get it right. The real answer to this story will never be spilled onto the internet because the families, wisely, want to protect their children by not commenting on this viral nightmare. People like you can invent whatever scenarios you want, but I can guarantee that what you propose as truth is just wishful thinking on your part. Calling this a publicity stunt on the part of the mom and denying that the girlfriend had any part in this is absolutely 100% false. Mom went into protection mode of her kid (since you don't know the exact age of the kid in question, I assume you're again just speculating) and I can state with certainty that the GF was 100% responsible for the postings of the 60 images. You can take that to the bank. But what I want to know is, what personal interest do YOU have in this saga that made you feel compelled to post your theory? I happen to know both parties involved and both are hurting from the sudden viral explosion of this story, especially the young man. Why are you trying to throw more fuel on the fire by posting your invented theory? The story was dying out, as it deserved to (let's face it, it's not that exciting a story), and you have to throw your 2 cents in with "cracks in the mom story starts "? What supposed cracks? Seriously, let us know what "cracks" you have discovered, Sherlock. What breaking news is there in this non-story? You say that the kid "wants to act but can't handle the pressures of the public." What the hell does that mean? Sorry, but if it's OK by your standards to analyze and evaluate people by what you read on internet posts, I must come to the conclusion, after reading your post, that you are a jealous, perhaps schizophrenic, hater who resents his own life and the choices he has made and wants nothing but to destroy all those around him so as to inflate his own self-image. I could be wrong, but that's what happens when you blindly judge without knowing all the facts.

Blogresonder you are the first person in 72 hours to make sense. No one does want the actual story because it's not sensational. They were just 2 teenage kids who broke up. He was moving on with his life ....she was still angry. The pictures were her way of getting back at him for moving on. A blogger took the letter from his family on the Google Forum and ran it with the pictures and a story is born. His family just wants it all to go away.

Yeah agreed. And I am girl not gay and I think it is a nice photo. His name and his picture are out there & could be taken as a compliment to be on meme generator with Chuck Norris. He should reply with a You Tube channel and tell his side of the story. The more Google has on his name the more better things, less hateful that will come up. There is no such thing as privacy anymore with the internet.

Do you think EVERYONE responds without trying to look for facts. There are search engines galore with the internet. You can't be that close to the story or you would KNOW the 'boy" is not a minor. He's at least 18 years of age. You too, are not credible. I've looked at the meme generator, and all it takes is any ONE person to caption any ONE photo and the whole rest of the world can comment. Unless you have an IP address, a search warrant of the computer and a confession by the girl stating she created the site you have nothing. And I have yet to see anything concrete stating the same. This is an unfortunate incident that happens on a daily basis with the internet. It is odd that so many "blog sites' happended to pick up only THIS story. It raises eyebrows that it was intentionally brought to their attention. I'm no jealous, schizophrenic, hater. I merely have seen one too many one sided blogs that usually tend to lack the truth. And the fact that there is even a discussion over a teenage breakup where a harmless, though not nice prank was created by Unknown persons is any type of discussion is pathetic. The issue should be with the inability for persons to infiltrate Googles efforts to remove ANY material that ANYONE finds offensive. I do not blame anyone for wanting to protect their child, but there is more to EVERY story than believing what you want to believe.
