A cat named Smokey is vying for the title of loudest purr-er in the world. Well, actually, Smokey's owners are vying for the title on behalf of their pet. Smokey most likely does not care a hill of beans about getting into the Guinness Book of World Records, where her owners argue that she deserves a place due to her 80-decibel purr. (Most cats purr at 25 decibels.)

Moreso,

When measured close up, her purrs reach 92 decibels, equivalent to the noise of a lawnmower, hair dryer, or, it is claimed, a Boeing 737 coming in to land.

Its owners, Ruth and Mark Adams, say Smokey's deafening purrs make it impossible for them to hear the television or radio when she is in the room and they struggle to have telephone conversations.

"It can be annoying if her loud purring starts as you are watching television and it has reached a romantic bit in a film, because it's impossible to hear and spoils the moment."

Smokey is, by all accounts, very happy, probably in no small part due to the pleasure she takes in ruining the "icky" moments in the cheesy romantic movies her owners insist on watching, and then purr-laughing hysterically to herself.

You be the judge. Is this the world's loudest purr?

Because this is very important news, The Week weighed in with a "Best Opinion" on the subject, collected from Jordan Yerman at Now Public: "Prolonged exposure to anything over 95 db can cause hearing loss." But a cat's purr might also be good for you, say holistic healers.

Our official opinion: Smokey is cute, but we'd sue our neighbors for $2 million if we kept hearing that infernal racket through the wall at night.
