Priest/Sex Abuse Scandal Takes Startling Turn: Catholic Church Official Faces Criminal Charges for Coverup

Monsignor-William-Lynn.jpg
Monsignor William Lynn
The Catholic Church's sex-abuse scandal veered into uncharted waters Thursday with the indictment of one of former Philadelphia Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua's top aides. Monsignor William Lynn, now 60, is accused of shielding molester priests from detection and transferring them to unsuspecting parishes.

As the Philadelphia Daily News notes:

It's believed to be the first time a high-ranking Catholic official has been accused of being criminally accountable for covering up priest abuse. . . .As Bevilacqua's secretary for clergy, he was the Archdiocese's personnel director and responsible for investigating reports of priest sexual abuse from 1992 until 2004.

Lynn was one one of four priests charged yesterday in Philly. The three others, plus a sixth-grade teacher at a Catholic school, were charged with actually raping and sexually assaulting the same boy.

But it's the indictment of Lynn for allegedly endangering the welfare of a child that breaks new ground in a scandal that broke nationally a decade ago. Everywhere else, including New York, high Church officials have escaped criminal prosecution. SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, hailed the stunning news:

This news may mean that finally one of the hundreds of complicit Catholic officials who have hidden or are hiding clergy sex crimes might be brought to justice.

Best succinct story on this may be on CatholicCulture.org, but the full report of the grand jury is really a blockbuster — Chapter Four of the lengthy report is titled "How Msgr. Lynn Endangered Children."

The jurors were on the verge of indicting former Philly archdiocese head Cardinal Bevilacqua, who's old and ailing.

God never promised that the church would always have perfect people in it, He only said that "the gates of hell will not prevail against it."  That alone guarantees that the church will always be under attack by satan and further by all the perfect people outside the church who know nothing of  the wonderful sinners and mercy within the church.

They’re raping children because they think that the “Secret of God” is that he has sex with children. Society’s refusal to see the difference between consensual adult partnerships and child rape shows how ignorant this entire planet is. But then what do you expect when they listen to a man that leads a church that didn’t decide that child molestation is a “grave sin” or a "heinous crime" until 2010. The Pope has at least at one point said that the scandal was a hold over from pederasty...indicating that contrary to what everyone wants to believe, they have always done it. I would have to assume that the reason there aren’t cases from before the 1950’s is because parents told their children not to talk about it because they didn’t believe them...much like a lot of people today. The Priests think they are God and can take whatever they want. And the reason that the other churches are experiencing the same problem is because they broke away from the Catholic Church which was set up to push them into the Priesthood to have sex with children (pederasty). The reason that child molestation is more common amongst homosexuals is because society makes them confused. They are so stupid. The fact that the Church was founded on pederasty proves that they lied from the start. They were never celibate!!! They were child molesters. Their congregation refuses to speak up against him because they worship the Pope. They lift the Priests up, that’s why they get offended every time someone speaks up against him. The guy is a monster. 13 children committed suicide in Belgium. Before that was made public, the Pope reprimanded the priest that worked with the authorities. After it became public, the Pope issued an apology. I don’t know about anyone else, but that would seem to indicate that he was more sorrowful for the fact that it was made public than he was for the fact that 13 kids were stripped of their innocence, had their hearts ripped out, deprived of ever having a chance to know God, never having a chance for spirituality. It would be nice if people would start to realize that they leaked that crap into other churches and society, but all of the Christians are too proud to admit that they might be at fault in some way. It’s funny. You hear Christians talk about how the spiritual is dangerous, but they have no spirit. And the spiritual may be dangerous, but their religion is disgusting.

Its all a setupDoing the hooch's shuffle?Start a scandal then pay through the nose to sell human implantable FCC devices. The radio was designed in Italy originally and the control used by the church over sex is a failed ideology. Work the system for years and advertise sex as something abhorrent or mentally deviant when sex is necessary for human survival of the species and then attach dogma to it as if the conjuring of some binding spell/blackmailer/blackjack/death or the police force will stand by and let blood for god when the bible tells us that god does not talk to use directly? The planning of long term projects like this are flawed in that time is on the side of sensibility and that voice in someones head at the head of the class giving head to the schmo that can mark her here/hear/there in drivers education class suite is quite likely your government agent build a case to be tried by good citizens tax dollars that could have Harvard's looking like Harvard's and not just because they do care, and everyone could get a chance for a level playing field and we wonder if that is the world we want when the we hunt ourselves. Some small children like sex all by themselves/or entertain or just look and there are time they include/exclude/toggle the interest in others in some cat and mouse/potato/cucumber/electrical gizmo for what ever reason and we need to know if that is acting out or just natural/unnatural/supernatural/the nature of the beast/sad/happy/practical or just none of our concern? Age has nothing to do with anything concerning this subject when the process of training feeds fresh souls to the slaughter on all four ramps and the prods are held by a slew of number two's all dead and gone while the stench lingers on the wonder is who/when where/or why cus your goina die and he/she/him/her/hummer/or pistol packing person needs that much training with the birth rate refreshes us all and that give no right/wrong or differences children themselves as we all are? The deviancy is the thinking that some magic law will make the world better with no intimacy in it toward one another when pets die without care and the intimacy of a cycle that turns again and again and again when going against the right of a child's caregiver someone that would not clean their butt even traditionally for some cultures or whatever reason beats begetting rotten flesh for aliving caz that ain't living unless that's the real meaning of training day and they need their sleep too/there of/also . That selling some device to ID everyone will give the power of control to the right person when we can see who thinks they are the right person orders militiamen to burn and bulldoze a church with 1,500 people inside? We have laws based on the reasoning of this kind of thinker? Sex laws are the culprit, 6-8-2010 Rochester, New York Mr. Quinn was murdered and they called it a beating death the murders, [Yes: a small mob was their inciting a man] are free but they held one person in lieu of a 15K bail the when sex offender usually get a million dollar bail and they wont call it murder? a beating death? I was chipped as a child and chipped as an adult, used by individuals and/or unidentified corporate interests/personal/corporate gain/what but I know who has connections and some answers on a need to know bases are in order and here is where it ends? With someones Phill/tell/ltail? These laws must be obliterated world wide starting at a local level and this type of ugly is far worse than any sex act, social act, can warrant punishment when masturbation or the use of condoms were prohibited and we were told not to bath with anyone anywhere ever for health reasons yet we're told that the sea ill give up the dead and dead will give new life so all this can make since/cents? Moms see their kids fathers in the eyes of their children in some cases the intimacy of a relationship spoken of as something abhorrent by some person/company/group/religions belief done not injuring of ones child or their neighbors child if we/they/them/us/even the mindless are to ever lean to live together in any structure of society and be at peace with all things/people/tribes/nations/provinces/tongue/lands we really need that too be/become skewed in the minds of persons listening to such teaching as some universal truth when the universal truth is sex is not murder or even punishable in it's self. Sex is not an act, It a state of being and if someone is offended by ones being then that is their problem personally and they need to learn to control themselves, not other through laws that do no good for anyone and that could ever support life on any planet at it's purest promotes genocides when 9 out of ten new crimes are committed by someone not on the registry and we are being born to die till a tie if any a perpetual power source till the power runs out of people to hunt for fun and profit feeding into a system were a act of submission is required for forgiveness and the bj given the judge sentencing a person to life saves that person who has been brought before the court for the density of a vial/color of skin/blessed or unblessed or just living it up in in the tent in the back yard it's the wrong hunt for all the wrong reasons and yelled busy work that makes blood for the he said she said when more often the protector unarmed the one calling for protections and the protector is the predator connected for the wrong reasons too? People are not after us, our laws have been based on an advertised hype to sell more TV's/to sell more advertising to feed a frenzy of fraud and promote more rhetoric about something we torture and kill so we can mine and design something to hunt ourselves to channel resources too continue to roll around from language to country all the time doing the hooch's shuffle? End Sex Laws Now! signed the twice chipped guy.

Also read about the recent Venice Fla episode. The catholic church is just another corporation but far more dangerous. We must stop all churches from getting any tax exempt status and also start prosecuting in our courts.

Pain. Anger. My bishops have betrayed trust. Please help mothers turn this to forgiveness. Help us to act justly. This translates into seeking justice. Not vengeance. Simply justice. Please help us to hold the highest order on Earth to the lowest esteem. To assist motherhood with care and childhood with tenderness. It is appropriate to charge the ones just under the bishop with the recycling of predators. The bishops can not now be charged in any country. One day they can be held accountable in an international court if the guilt is there, let it be. For now mothers, it is on you and no where else, where to place your children and who to trust them with.

Is Pennsylvania a Pro-Pedophile State? You be the judgeBy Mike Ference

Now that we know an entire country (Ireland) permitted dysfunctional sex freaks, disguised as Catholic clergy, to torture and molest innocent children for decades, maybe, it’s time to expose the same heinous crimes in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Former PA State Rep. Lisa Bennington, D-Allegheny County, held a press conference on May 12, 2008 in Harrisburg, PA to discuss legislation known as the Child Victim’s Act of Pennsylvania, which addressed statute of limitations and identifying sex abusers.

If the bill had passed, it would have changed the age at which a civil suit could have been filed from until the accuser is 30 to 50, bringing the civil statute of limitations in line with the criminal statute. The bill would also have suspended the civil statute of limitations for two years in child sex abuse cases in which the statute had expired so that people over the age limit could file a suit. And it would have allowed the filing of such actions against child sex abusers and their enablers in both public and private institutions.

According to Bennington, it was the private institutions (like in Ireland) where offenders were allowed to move on and continue with their lives. “Their victims left behind to pick up the pieces, never getting their day in court and or a chance to see justice carried out. They live with this horrific crime for the rest of their lives,” she pointed out.

A 2005 Philadelphia Grand Jury Report uncovered 63 priests in the Philadelphia archdiocese who had abused hundreds of children over several decades. In some cases, archdiocese leaders intentionally concealed the abuse to protect the church.

And Bennington stressed, her bill did not target the Catholic Church. Rather, “it pertains to all religious institutions, public schools, youth groups and any organization where child sex abuse has occurred. It would have given all Pennsylvania victims their fundamental right to hold those accountable that afflicted or allowed the abuse to occur.

Sounds reasonable and seems like a good thing. Similar legislation has passed in California and Delaware in recent years. In California, about 1,000 victims came forward and 300 predators were identified. Yet, there’s one PA lawmaker who strongly opposed the legislation and never even intended to give the bill a hearing.

State Rep. Thomas R.Caltagirone D., (Berks County), the House Judiciary Committee chairman, said the proposed bill was driven by victims’ desire to win large legal payouts. Caltagirone goes on to say the bill is all about money, not about justice.

Ironically, Caltagirone was quick to vote with fellow legislators for a 50 percent increase in their pensions in 2001 and the infamous middle of the night pay raise in 2005. The state rep along with other lawmakers chose to take the self-induced pay grab immediately in unvouchered expenses. Many PA residents felt this made the elected officials look like money-hungry crooks, as it was eventually declared unconstitutional.

As expected, the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference deplored the bill. Choosing to continue to protect perverted priests, rather than seek justice. Likewise, the Insurance Federation of Pennsylvania was also against the bill. And, while Caltagirone officially declared the legislation dead, his puppy-protection HB 39 bill – which would forbid dog owners from performing surgery on their pups – is still very much alive. As someone who has been investigating clergy abuse in Pennsylvania for almost 20 years, this writer can’t help but think that something is amiss in the commonwealth – just like things were amiss in Ireland.

On the eastern side of Pennsylvania the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office issued a scathing report on the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for the high level of sexual abuse among Catholic priests and the cover ups and the reassigning of credibly accused Catholic priests by Cardinals Anthony Bevilacqua and John Krol and their aides. It should be noted that Bevilacqua first served as Bishop of the Pittsburgh Diocese before his transfer to Philadelphia. Insiders claim Bevilacqua left his successor, Donald Wuerl, quite a mess.

For example, while Bevilacqua was still assigned to the Pittsburgh Diocese he agreed to place Fr. John P. Connor, an admitted child molester first within the Pittsburgh Diocese and later, after Bevilacqua took over in Philadelphia Fr. Connor was assigned there. According to testimony in the Philadelphia Grand Jury the arrangement was based on a “tradition of bishops helping bishops.” Sadly, Fr. Connor went on to abuse others and Bevilacqua was found to be a liar according to the grand jury report.

One has to wonder why the Pittsburgh Diocese voluntarily settled with 32 alleged survivors of clergy abuse. $1.25 million for crimes the Pittsburgh Diocese will never have to admit ever occurred. The settlement would not tarnish the stellar reputation of Archbishop Donald Wuerl who never had to pay a dime of diocese money to any clergy abuse victims during his tenure as bishop in the Pittsburgh Diocese.

Oddly enough, an underling – so to speak – Auxiliary Bishop Bradley reconciled the situation, only weeks before Bishop David Zubik was to be installed as the new leader of the diocese. So it seems everything fell into place.

32 survivors received a few bucks, the diocese is off the hook for any future civil or maybe even criminal suits based on the settlement. Wuerl continues to do in Washington D.C. whatever it is that Archbishops do and Zubik was allowed to get a fresh start in the Pittsburgh Diocese without the interference of those civil suits that were resting in limbo for several years.

The settling of the civil suits certainly allowed for an impressive and dignified installation of Bishop Zubik, no hecklers or demonstrators from any groups with compassion for children sexually abused by Catholic priests.

And, although I have no proof, nor anyway to calculate, I would be willing to bet the farm that more money was spent on Zubik’s festivities than was awarded to 32 survivors of alleged abuse by Catholic priests from the Pittsburgh Diocese. No big deal, the worst is over.

Unless of course, somewhere down the road – maybe a year, a few months, a couple of weeks, or perhaps in the next few days – information turns up that the cases of sexual abuse actually occurred and that cover ups were the norm in the Pittsburgh Diocese just like cover ups and shifting priests from parish to parish was the norm in the archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Anyone with a little common sense would be concerned that a man of the cloth might be tempted to hide crimes of clergy sexual abuse of young children only on the eastern side of the commonwealth of PA and not the western side as well.

That’s a lot of ifs ands or buts – only time will tell if Pennsylvania is indeed a pro-pedophile state. For now, we can only laud former Rep Bennington for trying to make a difference in the lives of those sexually, physically and emotionally abused as children; as for Rep. Caltagirone – one politician who obviously cares more about puppies than children – maybe it’s time for the law maker to rollover and play dead.

Mike Ference has been an advocate for clergy sex abuse survivors for over 21 years. He has written about the problem and works with clergy abuse families in Pennsylvania and across the United States helping victims work through the corrupt bureaucratic maize of injustice. He attributes much of the problem to corrupt leaders in government, organized crime and Catholic Church hierarchy more concerned about power and money than the salvation of souls. He has labeled the commonwealth of Pennsylvania a Pro-pedophile state where Catholic clergy sex abuse cover-ups are still the norm. Finally just maybe, there can be some kind of justice for victims who have been sexually used and abused by clergy.

Finally, not just the child predators will be held accountable, but also those who enabled and covered up these crimes will be held accountable.

Finally there is hope for our kids so they will not be sexually abused within the hierarchy's secret systemic culture of protecting those who harm kids, rather than protecting the innocent children.

..And hopefully, all church officials and employees who have committed these crimes of endangering the welfare children will also be held accountable. This is the only for sure way to get these crimes against kids stopped.

Ron, Really? The church isn't perfect? Name one institution outside the "church" that has a record for sexual abuse that is as bad as the Catholic Church. No one comes close. We have a church that claims to be the only church, and the secular world has a better record in terms of morality. Tell me that you have never, in some honest moment, wondered if something was not wrong deep down in the whole concept of Catholicism. How many folks were killed in the Inquisition? Do you even know? How long did the Catholic Church wage war on mankind? Would you even guess 613 years? And for what, not bowing the knee to the pope? Translating the Bible into English? The church isn't perfect? That's what you tell yourself?

JoshuaR, I do not blame you at all for your reaction to all this sex scandal mess. It is ripping my heart out. Please do a little research and look at the differences between what a true follower of Christ is, over against the claims of the Catholic Church. There is a difference. If indeed the pope is the Vicar of Christ how could he turn a blind eye to child abusing priests? Would Christ do that? Why would the RC Church allow this to continue for centuries? If a priest has the authority to call Christ down from heaven to be re-sacrificed on the Roman altars, why cannot he put to death his own sin? He cannot. He has no such power. Scripture says to let not fornication even be named once among the believers. The RC church has never been able to get even close to that level of morality. And they will never. Research the Inquisition and please explain to me or anyone else why it was necessary to kill 50,000,000 people in a period of 613 years. The simple faith of the early church lives on despite the iron fist of the Roman church. It is the Bride of Christ, and indeed, the gates of hell will not prevail against her.

Let me tell you about my families setting me up for an exorcism andher need for money through political, and religious panderingconcerning sex.

I remember living behind a church were Brian Lamb, and a bunch ofthese Cspan guys used too have a wood shop. At that place of residencemy mom thought I needed an exorcist, after playing in the mud the wayvery young children will sometimes with my uncle who mixed a glass ofthis red clay in water and told me it was chocolate milk.

After drinking it as he would force me to do thing all the time likethe time he made me cut off the limb I was sitting on and the devicecame out of my shoulder being more powerful and in control I broke outwith ring worm all over my body and my mom told me it was writing thatcould not be understood so she had priests come in from the church.

I guess my Dad did not know that one of the people at the church wasin line for being my new dad but that was not in the cards because Iguess he felt I was in need of discipline after an accident in thewood shop. I had been check out on the band saw by my grandfather whowas a millwright in Arkansas and to do some jobs the blade shield hadto be removed. Some kids came in and wanted to use the saw, then gotmad that I wanted to warn them to put the guard on and they told methey owned it all and I was not to tell them anything, and after thishead strong kid cut his thumb off the other kids said they would telltheir fathers it was all my fault, but it was not.

I had a fever of well over a hundred and I was a bloody mess with theinfection. The priests came in with outer guys and one had a camera. The priests would throw me across the room well the other snapped apicture. I would fall on furniture and the floor and they would tellme get on the bed, don't get off the bed very loud and when I wouldcrawl back on the bed they would pick me up and throw me over and overagain well the other priest would snap another picture and this wenton till one guy said we have enough picture and they left me in theblood, mud, and bedding, then my aunt came in with some save that wasfor ring worm.

She spread the save and kidded me about dying when the rings got to myheart. After getting well I went back to the wood shop and the guyshad made me a special shield and gave me my sword which were both madeof wood and I had to fight one of the guys in my shorts because I didnot want to remove them and the other guy was naked (he know who heis). I was still not up too speed and lost the battle. They thencalled me the bad guy and this group was supposed to be my gate keeperor something like that appointed by the priests. My Dad did not likethem much also but that did not matter much because someone at thechurch was going to be my new dad till he said no, my mom cried allot,my dad was gone, I healed up, but I still have a case.

Please know that there is nothing any of you can do to make what youand the rest of the ones involved can do to make this my fault. See atthe time I was about seven years old. Since then the church has madean effort to kill me, to the extent of trying to pass laws to kill sexoffenders.

Come on, keep it up, keep pushing laws that you as a group of verysaid individuals know have no value. Take me too court so I can own anetwork. I have met with your staff members in private since alongwith military personal and others.

Now lets note when this happened I was only a small child being thrownaround a room like a rag doll by people that started all this clearback in the late fifty's and the steering by very bad people thatthink abusing kids to make laws to stop abuse, Ha! these laws arebogus and the fact that they can not kill gays anymore does notjustify the use of laws too kill someone set up by them to create someworthless set of laws by a fusion of church and state is wrong andrealty designed by them to harm us all.

My case was pragmatic but more than that I know what was done and whowas involved making vendetta laws that really have no bases in truth, and are based in lies.

Thank God people are finally getting over their awe of the Roman Catholic pope and hierarchy, because they have literally been getting away with murder for centuries, as I show at http://JesusWouldBeFurious.Org/. Why should they worry about "getting caught" if people continue to shy away from prosecuting them for anything that they do?

Theladyrides

Yes! Someone has to remind these men that they are servants of the church and its parishioners; they are not princes of the church. They have no authority but what we give them. That makes it incumbent on the mothers of children in the schools and church to throw off that yoke of submissiveness, that respect for "authority" that we learned as children, and protect their young from these predators. You can make them listen. Just take your children out of their schools.

I agree with you 110%. Sadly, PA judges and elected officials are bought andsold like stolen merchandise at a flea market (my apologies to you if you, your friends or close relatives are flea market vendors). Truth be told, there are so many catholics and mobsters in PA, anything can and is coveredup.
