Broadway Is the Second Most Dangerous Road for Pedestrians in NYC

dont_walk.jpg
The Tri-State Transportation Campaign has released a report identifying the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in New York City, New Jersey, and Connecticut, where an average of 415 walkers are killed yearly. The (sort of) good news: They've also released interactive Google maps showing the locations that are most dangerous, so you can know and take care to look both ways (or perhaps avoid walking in said locations altogether). The maps give the names and ages of victims killed there, which makes for a morbid, though informative, accompaniment to your morning coffee.

The most dangerous road for pedestrians is the Hempstead Turnpike in Nassau County. Broadway in Manhattan was the second most dangerous, with 11 fatalities between 2007 and 2009. Also bad were Atlantic Avenue, Ocean Parkway, and Kings Highway in Brooklyn; Broadway and Grand Concourse in the Bronx; and 7th Avenue, the Henry Hudson Parkway/West Street, and -- close to home -- Bowery in Manhattan.

"…morbid, though informative, accompaniment to your morning coffee."  There's just a scary sting to that. But, Broadway coming in as second most dangerous?  That would strike people as either hard to believe or unsurprising.  But being the "celebrity road" that it is, Broadway should be rehabilitated to make it safer for pedestrians.  Anything from car accidents to neglect should be cut down.
