Some Schools Could Lose 30 Percent of Teachers under Bloomberg Plan - WNYC

The Bloomberg Administration has announced that some schools could lose up to 30 percent of their teaching force, WNYC is reporting this morning.

Under a worst-case scenario, the Department of Education is set to lay off one to five teachers at most schools, with some losing 30 percent of their overall teaching positions. More than 6,000 teachers could be lost between layoffs (4,500) and attrition (1,500).

Most teachers facing the axe will be in elementary schools, WNYC says, and none will be ESL instructors. Small schools, a trademark of the Bloomberg/Klein years, will stand to be the most disproportionately affected, especially those in Harlem, Corona, the South Bronx, and the Lower East Side.

Teachers union president Michael Mulgrew is calling Bloomberg's plan "fear mongering" at a time when the city is projecting an actual surplus (though it is set to receive less in federal and state education funds).
