This Week in the Voice: Arturo O'Farrill's Journey for His Father

08@200.jpg
This week in the Voice, Larry Blumenfeld chronicles Grammy-winning pianist Arturo O'Farrill's trip to Havana to, in his words, "complete a musical, spiritual, and cultural journey for my father." His father, Chico O'Farrill, was revered in the Jazz world, a "stone genius, on the level of Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus." Chico had left Cuba for good in 1959, but Arturo took it upon himself to bring his music back.

Robert Sietsema checks out Dai Wah Yummy City, a Cantonese restaurant catering to "well-off immigrants who have moved out of Chinatowns into the front-yarded swaths of middle-class housing in Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst."

Elsewhere in Brooklyn, Lauren Shockey eats at Cobble Hill's Breuckelen, which features "new American fare that champions the ideals of farm living within a decidedly urban environment."

J. Hoberman watches French hit Of Gods and Men, the story of "eight gentle Trappist monks" who travel to Algeria, "only to be abducted and massacred, presumably by fanatics of a rival religious persuasion." Meanwhile, Eric Hynes talks to Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul.

Also, Sean Fennessey listens to British singer Adele's second album that is brimming with "a diva's stride and a diva's purpose."
